Nancy Nyambura Wagi Maina

Project Officer, ICS

Nancy has over seven years’ experience in Youth Development programming. She is currently a Project Officer managing youth volunteer projects under the International Citizen Service program(ICS). Overcoming challenges of exclusion while working at VSO Indonesia as a black single woman minority in a foreign land she was inspired to become a social inclusion and gender champion for citizenship engagement. She spearheaded the establishment of the local disability task force within the government at county level, supporting the development and implementation of an advocacy plan where the most affected took lead in designing, planning and the implementation. Returning home, she created Kenya Sign Language Explorers Club as a practical local solution to enable deaf inclusion and growth of local economies. Nancy is looking to develop this project into a social enterprise with the aim of becoming a fully-fledged institution run and led by the deaf to create a culture of communication mirrored in sign language courses being part of the national curriculum in primary school and an increase in decent employment for deaf people as facilitators or entrepreneurs.
